Bravery. Determination. Self-confidence. Disney princesses have got it going on! Turns out these fantastic femmes can also teach us a thing or two when it comes to achieving our fitness goals.
1. A great playlist is a must-have.
Snow White was right on the money with “Whistle While You Work.” She knew that a song can help you get through a grueling workout. In fact, studies have indicated that listening to music while you work out can help you stay focused and work out longer. Research conducted at Brunel University found that listening to music while you exercise could increase your endurance by up to 15%. The trick is to find songs at the right pace. Songs between 120 and 140 beats per minute (BPM) have the maximum effect on moderate exercisers.
2. Be active with your furry friends.
In 2011, researchers at Michigan State University found that dog owners are 34% more likely to fit in 150 minutes of walking per week than non-dog owners. So instead of just letting your dog run about in the backyard on his own, take him for a 30-minute walk twice a day. Not only is it good for his health, but yours too!
3. Change up your routine and try something new.
Your muscles grow accustomed to doing the same workout day in and day out, which is why people often find themselves hitting a plateau—the weight stops coming off or the definition they’re trying to achieve doesn’t happen. Experts recommend switching up your workout every 6 weeks to shock your muscles and keep burning those calories.
4. Go for a swim.
Ok, so we know that Ariel was actually trying to get out of the water, but swimming is a great low-impact exercise that burns a ton of calories. In fact, a 155-pound person swimming freestyle can burn anywhere from 493-704 calories per hour! If your muscles and joints are feeling a bit sore, whether from a tough workout, injury, or arthritis, the pool is a great place to achieve your calorie burn while allowing your body to heal.
5. Get plenty of sleep.
Sleep and exercise are inextricably linked. Regular exercise can help promote a better night’s sleep. While a poor night’s sleep can result in a shorter, less intense workout the next day. Make sleep a priority by reducing or minimizing screen time at night (TV, tablet, or smart phone), dimming the lights, and avoiding sugary or caffeinated foods before bed.
6. Find a way to make your workout fun!
For some of us, working out is a chore. Like, the worst chore ever. Which is why it’s so important that you find a way to make exercise fun. Take a fitness class, work out with a friend, take your workout outside, or download some new songs on your playlist. There are plenty of ways to make fitness fun, which means you’re less likely to give up on your goals.
7. Never give up.
The only thing that impossible for a Disney princess to do is to give up on her goals. Somehow, some way, these strong-willed, determined women always make their dreams come true.
Now go forth, unleash your inner Disney princess, and achieve your goals. We believe in you!
